A new generation, one that grew up with a data surplus, is coming along. To this cohort, it’s no big deal to miss a tweet or ten, to delete a blog from your reader or to not return a text or even a voice mail. The new standard for a vacation email is, ‘When I get back, I’m going to delete all the email in my box, so if it’s important, please re-send it next week.’ This is what always happens when something goes from scarce to surplus. First we bathe in it, then we waste it.

I feel like I’ll be repeating this a hundred times tomorrow but…

hipsterwavves:

Can we please learn to fucking differentiate between rabid Vancouver hockey fans and everybody fucking else in Vancouver?

It wasn’t “all the the canuck fans”. It wasn’t “all of Vancouver.”

It was some retarded hockey jockeys.

Jesus christ now stop talking like the entire province flew off the handle.

Our role as Social Media Marketers - who needs us?

Ok to be clear..who needs us and what do we do exactly.

If you are reading this there is a good chance you don’t need us.  If you are reading this with a portfolio in your hand while sponging spilled coffee off your shirt with a car key in your other hand, however…you might.

We know for sure that you know of someone that needs us.

We tweet and we follow..we like and we are liked..we Facebook, we blog we link and we engage.  We are not you..but we know what you stand for and we work for you.

Some people are hiring clerical staff with the idea that one of the “things” in their job description should be - handle social media.  Wrong-o!  Unless you are hiring a clerk that happens to be hiding a background in Marketing and Communication..you are not sending the right message (and I would have to ask why that person is taking on a clerical job in the first place??) Anyway, neither here nor there.

You know social media is important..or you’ve been told you HAVE to have it. As a business person you want to do everything right to leverage your position.

One of our worst fears as business people or conscientious management employees is that we are not doing justice to our position..we are not taking every opportunity to make sure that we are top of mind to our consumers.  If we don’t or can’t participate in all the social media platforms we are $%!# on a stick.  Not true

Let yourself off the hook.  There are only 24 hours in a day and frankly I don’t think any of you were hired as or put the title of “social marketer” next to CEO or manager on your business card.  Run your business, know the importance of some things but please for the love of Pete… delegate.

Do you know what is so comforting about going into McDonalds and getting a burger?  It tastes ok and it looks fine..but that’s not why you feel swaddled.  You walked in the door knowing exactly what you were going to get.  Every time you order that burger it is exactly the same..it looks the same it smells the same it feels the same when if hits your stomach and no matter what..you knew it was going to be that way.  Comfort in familiarity is as important as the product itself.

I can compare social media because what I want to convey is the message that nobody cares what snake-oil you are flogging until they know something about you.  Sure some may buy it out of necessity and some may even recommend it to their friends if it works really well..but to hear someone say..hey!  I know some one that does that..we’re friends on twitter (or facebook or linkedin or tumblr).  They seem really fun and knowledgeable and I can get in touch with them right now. Can you buy that?  And can you build that kind of perception without a little help? Probably not.

We are up front about who we are.  We never try to impersonate you we are just your messengers.  We are carrying your torch with flare and enthusiasm :)

Nobody looks at you funny if you hire some one to answer your phone..they would look at you funny if you didn’t.  That voice on the end of the phone may be that new customers 1st impression of your business.  Is it important?  yes.  Do you have time or should you be doing it…no.

It doesn’t matter where you are located.  And it costs less than you would think..probably.

You get my point.  Contact us for a quote
